How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Every Room

The most common decorating mistake is a rug that's too small. Here are practical rules for choosing size based on room dimensions and furniture layout.

Why Does Your Decor Feel Incomplete?

In most homes where a room feels disjointed despite beautiful pieces, the culprit is a small rug floating in the middle of the space with no connection to the seating furniture. A rug isn't a decorative piece placed in the center—it's the frame that brings scattered pieces into one cohesive composition.

The basic rule: the rug should touch at least the front legs of seating pieces. When this visual relationship is established, the eye perceives the arrangement as connected even if the pieces differ in color.

Practical Sizes by Room

You don't need complex calculations. These sizes cover most situations in homes and apartments:

  • Small living room (under 15 m²): 160 × 230 cm
  • Medium living room (15 – 25 m²): 200 × 290 cm
  • Large majlis or hall (over 25 m²): 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 400 cm
  • King bedroom: 200 × 290 cm placed starting from the lower third of the bed
  • Hallway or kitchen: runner 80 cm wide with length suited to the space

Clearance from the Walls

Leave 20 to 40 cm between the rug edge and the wall in medium-sized rooms. This gap acts as a white frame around the picture and prevents the room from feeling cramped. In very small spaces, you can reduce the gap to 15 cm without harm.

In hallways the rule is different: leave at least 10 cm on each side so the rug looks intentional rather than squeezed between walls.

Test Before You Buy

Before ordering a size, tape the dimensions of the rug you're considering onto the floor and live with the outline for a full day. This simple method saves you the cost of returns and reveals whether the size blocks doorways or chair movement.
